Evolution: Darwin, Sex and Survival
Evolution-noun-any process of formation or growth; development: the evolution of a language; the evolution of the airplane.

Evolution is the change in something whether it is an animal, plant or human being. Evolution helps us trace back to older times and helps scientists understand how fossils change and how animals and humans got to where they are now. The largest known example of evolution is how humans evolved from an ape, but evolution is hard to understand because the truth is humans did not evolve from apes, but they share a common ancestor and are closely related to modern day apes.
A huge contributor to evolution is the well known biologist, Charles Darwin. Darwin was a risky young man who had a clever idea that was actually dangerous at the time. Darwin took a long voyage on a ship called The Beagle. On this voyage Darwin kept a very descriptive diary of all his findings and discoveries. Throughout his trip he found different fossils, plants and other evidence that led towards his theory of evolution. After decades of research and finding information, he came up with this “dangerous idea”. Later on Darwin found a book written by Alfred Russell Wallace that explained Darwin’s same exact theory. Darwin was frustrated that after his whole life of researching he was beat to his own publishing. Years later he went on to publishing a book called The Origin of Species that explained his full theory and that very idea has completely changed the outlook on the world today.

The definition of sexual intercourse is genital contact, esp. the insertion of the penis into the vagina followed by orgasm; coitus; copulation. How can this definition even slightly relate to the definition of evolution? They seem irrelevant, but really sex is one of the most important parts of how organisms evolve, some might even say that sex is more important than actual life. In this world life is a game. The way to play is you must survive to reproduce and if you die before you reproduce then you lost the game and have failed to contribute to the gene pool. When offspring is formed it is an addition to our gene pool. The genes are passed down and new things evolve from each reproduction. Whether it’s a new sickness, immunity or just a new hair color, offspring evolves from the parents even if it is just a slight difference.

Another big part of evolution to understand is survival, most commonly known as survival of the fittest. Survival of the fittest is very important and relates back to the game of life, survive to reproduce. The females want males that will give their offspring health and strength. They don’t want a sick offspring that won’t ever be able to care for themselves. The males are in constant competition to win the females over and have their young. The sick and weak males are out of luck when it comes to reproducing, unless they are smart enough to change it from survival of the fittest to survival of the sneakiest. Crickets are a great example of this because they find mates by making a loud chirp to attract the opposite sex. A weak cricket can use a strong cricket’s chirp to lure a female in and then take credit from the loud chirp. The cricket that actually made the sound could possibly get eaten by its predator making it easy to find with its loud mating call. Evolution is involved with many situations like this and is a very important topic to grasp.

I am in the ninth grade and this is my first year in Ms. Baker's class. Recently we learned about animals and how they are trained by humans using rewards. The reward is most commonly food. This video does not actually show how the dog learned to play basketball, but it does show the result of his training to be able to dribble and shoot.
There are many videos like this all over the internet. These videos include various animals, tricks and methods of training. Many people don't know this, but dogs have a good memory. Dogs usually remember things by associating things with it. For example, they know their owners voice and smell and just by hearing or smelling they know who is near them.Dogs are smarter than many people think, and I think that this video proves that point.
