Student Expectations
How Will I Meet This Expectation?
How Did I Meet This Expectation?
Demonstrate ability to
evaluate sources of
biology information on
the internet

I can use credible sources for topics.
I can ask my teacher to approved of
these sources.
I will use sources that have facts and tests, not
theories or perspectives that have not been proven
as a true stetement.
I will approve other people's sources.
I have researched a credible source
for my post that have been approved
by Ms. Baker. It is http://searchwarp.com/swa386743.htm
The sources I am using for my post
show facts and tests that the main
topic can be a solution to aiding
CPR professionals in saving lives without pressure.
I discovered 3 other sources about my topic to back up my first source in case people do not think it's 100% credible, http://www.webmd.com/heart/news/20081017/cpr-gives-stayin-alive-new-life , http://www.livescience.com/strangenews/081016-ap-stayin-alive-cpr.html , and http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=93520
I have approved 16 sources of other people's
links from early December to February 23.
I dissaproved the source, http://www.scienceagogo.com/index.shtml
Demonstrate an ability
to read and understand
current biology news
I can ask questions to get a better description
of the topic that I am commenting on.
I can also researched the topic to get a better
understanding and show more information to the
person who had the post.
I can researched events happening in the present.
The topic I have researched was
discovered on this past October. It is
about the song "Stayin Alive" being an
assitance to CPR professionals.
I researched more info on roadrunners and
put it on my comment for the post,
http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/blog/2009/01/25/endless-forms-most-beautiful-greater-roadrunner/
I asked Andie in person more info on the starfish on her post.
Demonstrate proper
use of online resources

I will use my own words when I explain my
paper not the words of my sources.
If I copy the words of my source, then I can
put quotation marks around it.
I used my own words for my post instead of my main source's words, http://searchwarp.com/swa386743.htm .
I put quotation marks around the last sentence as well as around the direct words of Dr. Matlock.
Publish work that is
available for peer-review
I willl have more than one person approve of my
paper so I can know how my viewers will react as
well as their perspective of it.
Teddy and William told me I have a good post, and gave me advice on adding more creativity to my post by adding my own video.
David said I just need to add one more source to my post.
Andie favored the way I typed my post and put quotes around Dr. Matlock's direct words.
Makarios answered the first question and stated that "Viva La Vida" is another example on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5TNK-TvIcI .
Discuss published work
with a practicing biologist
in that particular field

I can ask my biology teacher to approve of my
paper so I can make sure everything is connected.
I can asked the the creator of the source
questions concerning the topic, then it will be
comprehensive to me.
I ask Dr. David Lee Matlock questions about the amzing discovery he found which is the song "Stayin Alive" being an assistance to CPR professionals.
Ms. Baker has read my post and gave me feedback, so I can quickly critique the problems.
I have critque the problems and actually added more things such as videos, but Ms. Baker told me I should also make a video or other creative works for my post.
Provide constructive
peer-review to
classmates
I will be honest to others about how I feel about
their topic.
If they make an error, I will explain to them why it
is an error and how they can correct, but if there is none I will give
them positive feedback on the efffort.
I commented on 4 posts and gave
postitive feedback because I felt that the
information was in depth. The posts were http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/blog/2008/12/12/girls-help-boys-focus/,
http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/blog/2008/12/25/president-elect-obamas-holiday-present-to-science/
http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/blog/2009/01/20/the-genetics-of-race-assignment/
http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/blog/2009/01/25/endless-forms-most-beautiful-greater-roadrunner/
I approve Frank's post, "Bacteria
ARE
Computers?" on February 18.
I commented and approved Andie's
starfish post on February 20.
I commented on Matt's post, A Threat to The Penguin Population. I told him to add creativity by either adding pictures or videos so his readers would be more interested in his post on February 24.

Discuss in-class
assignments

I will participate and give my perspective of the
topic to show I am included in the discussion.
I can give information that can aid in the discussion.
I commented and gave my perspective
on the test dealing with races, http://missbakersbiologyclass.com/blog/2009/01/20/the-genetics-of-race-assignment/ on the blog.
We learned about the origins of race and stated why some people are racist in a class discussion.
I researched and participated in a debate dealing with how He La cells have been used.
Apply creativity
to work
I can create podcasts and describe my topic.
My viewers can answer questions created by myself to get a better
understanding of my topic.
Create a playlist that will keep the reader interested in the topic
instead of having complete silence around them.
I updated a video that aperson created created
from you-tube on my wiki page dealing with my post..
I posted a picture of the Bee Gees, the group that sings "Stayin Alive" on my post.
I have asked Dr. Matlock, the founder of this study some questions, but he has not replied to my message yet.
I created 2 interesting questions for my readers to answer. The 2nd question allows the reader to research another song that has the same rhtym as the heart beat.
I created a power point presentation as a tribute to the song, the Bee Gees, and to people who are still positive or staying alive. However I could not post it on the wiki for some reason, but I will save my slideshow to prove I showed creativity of my own. I also provided lyrics to the song so the readers can sing it like kareoke.

The name is Sloan ...Ian Sloan: My favorite topic of biology class was the discussion of fats. I remembered doing a project on fats in 7th grade, so I knew most of the information we talked about such as bad fats, polysaturated and saturated fats, as well as the good fat Monounsaturated, also known as an unsaturated fat. Some examples of polysaturated are fish, peanut butter, and cereal. Examples of monounsaturated are nuts and vegetable oil such as sunflower and olive oil. Here is an example of a monounsaturated fat chain: external image monounsaturated_oleic.jpgLink:http://www.fritolay.com/images/cm/monounsaturated_oleic.jpg

I have some of my favorite new songs I want to share with you guy: "I'm Having a Relaspe" by Eminem-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcY15VO6ttg, "When It Hurts" by Avant-http-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEMjg3pVKCk, "Ooh So Sexy" by Jon B-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PtkDErXxAg&feature=related, "Take A Ride" by Usher-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tc52TmNMAMQ&feature=related ,"You Found Me" by the Fray-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs51Fo9fuGM, "Dead and Gone" by T.I. ft. "Stayin Alive" by Bee Gees Helps CPR in Saving Lives
It is true, no matter how silly it sounds this song played on the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever is a great solution to aiding in CPR. The reason being is because the song has almost the same rhythm that aids in jump-starting a stopped heart. The founder of this study, Dr. David Lee Matlock of the University of Illinois Medical School said, "The American Heart Association reccomends 100 chest compressions per minute, far more than people realize." The beginning of this study had two parts that involved fifteen students and doctors. The first thing the students did was CPR on mannequins while listening to the song on iPODS. The doctors asked the students to time chest compressions with the song's rhythm. Five weeks later the students repeated the drill, but without the music. Instead they did the compressions while keeping song and it's rhythm in their heads. The first time for the average compressions was 109 per minute and the second was 113. Dr. Matlock said "It drove them and motivated them to keep up the heart rate, which is the most important thing." He was refering to the fact that the students did more compressions than he reccomended, but when your trying to revive a stopped heart it is better to do a few more compressions in a minute than just a few. This study showed the song "Stayin Alive" assist CPR professionals and these results were good enough to start more definitive studies with actual patients or unstrained people. It was reported that using this song with live patients in death situations works perfectly fine.
"The American Heart Association and the Associated Press contribute to this article".
What other songs do you think have the same beat as the heart beat?

Do you think that all CPR professionals should use this procedure more than the normal CPR procedure that is used every day?

Good post Ian, you might want to add a video, or even a song, you could reenact this, or you could just sing the song, you might want to get another source, just to make sure your getting the right information, and there are a lot of spelling errors.-Teddy
This is very interesting, but I think Teddy is right, you do need a video. This is such a fun and easy thing you could create a video with ease.-William
Ian this is awsome. It apply creativity, facts, and biology in one good report. One thing you might want to approve on though is your sources. If you could find one or two more sources it would seem a lot more legitiment. Although I do believe this is true. Before reading this I had no idea that people even studied it. You opened up my mind to think how the rhythm of sounds, can help the body to survive. Also maybe if you could find another instance when this true it would be really cool. Altough good post though.-David
I approve this post because its an interesting topic, it has alot of intrest because of the videos and picture. I also like that you have quotes.-Andie
This is very interesting Ian. I never knew that a cheesy song like Stayin Alive would actually be useful to life preservation. I would like to suggest another song that might serve the same purpose, but it is very young, and not as old of a song. The song is called Viva La Vida by ColdPlay. It is from there new album Viva La Vida (or death and all his horsemen). I have attached the
link to the
video. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5TNK-TvIcI
