My horse Angel
An American Saddlebred horse
Erin's Blog Post
(a horse receiving a vaccine.)
is a parasite
that infects equine species. The parasite Babesia Caballi is transmitted by a tropical horse
(a video about how ticks transmit disease). It is becoming a problem in the United States because horses with the parasite are crossing US borders undetected. The horses that test positive are destroyed or sent back to their country of origin. The symptoms of Babesiosis are fever, anorexia, depression, anaemia, Icterus and hemoglobinuria and colic. Also some non-specific symptoms can occur like slow injury recovery, loss of condition and low tolerance for heavy exercise.
The drug imidocarb dipropionate has been used to treat diseases like Texas Fever (also referred to as cattle fever) or babesiosis in cattle. The drug was tested on horses in a relatively high dose and it proved to eliminate the Babesia Caballi as well as eliminating the possibility of a horse transmitting babesiosis. The only side effects of the imidocarb dipropionate were diarrhea and upset stomach. Some post mortem examinations of infected horses showed intravascular haemolysis, jaundice, emaciation, enlarged spleen and liver, Kidney pale or with hemorrhages and oedema in the lungs. To find out about how research is conducted on these parasites I contacted PhD Patricia Holman.
How do ticks transmit babesia?
How does a horse owner know if their horse is just simply sore or has a minor infection or babesiosis
This is a really interesting topic! It's so great to read, because it's clear how passionate you are about horses. Your pictures and videos are relevant and intriguing, and your hyper links go to credible sources. The only thing I would suggest is to put captions underneath your videos and pictures. They're really nice, but it would help to know a little more about them. Overall, awesome job!
How Will I Meet This Expectation?
How Did I Meet This Expectation?
Demonstrate ability to evaluate sources of biology information on the internet
I will only use credible sources for my post by going to the original source for the information. If I do decide to use secondary sources I will check it against several other sources
I found several credible sources relating to my post.
I accepted two of my peer's sources on the wiki credible sources page.
By making sure the website couldn't be changed by an unqualified person and is updated daily by someone appropriate. Also, having original information or hyper linking to original information means the source is probably credible.
Demonstrate an ability to read and understand current biology news
I will go through the article sentence by sentence and underline what I don’t understand and look it up so I will be knowledgeable about the topic for class.
I went through the sources that got accepted on the wiki page sentence by sentence and picked out important information that should be included in my post. I underlined any information that I didn’t understand and looked it up online.
Demonstrate proper use of online resources
When I begin working on my post I will get many sources that I am able to compare to verify my information.
While working on a draft for the post I compared the information on my sources to other places on the internet and all my info turned out to be correct. My commons picture is relabeled for reuse and my sources are hyperlinked correctly in the text of my post.
Publish work that is available for peer-review
Using the blog and wiki pages I will publish things on my wiki that people can look at and consider their opinion on my work
Both of my sources are on the wiki page and got several reviews. Also, the copy of my post is on my wiki page and so are the pictures and a video relating to my post.
Discuss published work with a practicing biologist in that particular field
I will research the biologist's background and make a list of questions I would like to ask him\her.
I contacted Patricia Holman PhD via email at the College of Veterinary Medicine. She is interested in researching babesia at a molecular level and how they interact with their hosts. She searches for drug based vaccines that can help cure the disease.
Provide constructive peer-review to classmates
I will look at their work and offer my opinion on it. I will also ask people to review my work.
I approved several sources as credible so people can use them for their posts. I also reviewed Deanna's and Alex's post to give them suggestions to improve.
Discuss in-class assignments
My post will involve the behavior of horses during certain situations which relates to when we learned about animal behaviors
My post relates to the parasitism section of our text book (page 399-400). A parasite is a microbe that enters a host for a period of time and feeds on them.
Apply creativity to work
I will be applying creativity to my post because I am writing my post about something that I care about. I will make a video about the horses at my barn
I found a video relating to my topic and hyper linked it to my post. Also, my topic itself is very creative and I have a creative commons picture. Horses are a passion of mine and I always try to relate projects and school work to them. Learning about babesiosis has been interesting and I will be keeping up with the progress of finding a cure in the future.
